Every year, thousands of Americans suffer from diseases or injuries that require them to use a wheelchair. What type of impact does this have on society? If you are the loved one of one of those who must use a wheelchair, you may need to perform wheelchair accessible construction on the home to make it easier for them to move around and reach things. If you are the owner of a business, federal law may require that you make your facilities handicap accessible. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that public accommodations meet certain standards as to not discriminate against the handicapped, including those in wheelchairs.

Anyone who has transported a wheelchair companion knows the critical importance of wheelchair tie-downs in cars, vans or buses. Mobility disabled passengers are vulnerable to sudden movement in a vehicle -- and must be protected and secured when being driven to any destination.

On my many access audit visits up and down the country (UK) I have undertaken DDA audits in many multi storey buildings. As a disabled person and a DDA auditor (Disability Discrimination Act) I am greatly concerned about the DDA recommendations of areas of safe refuge within multi-story buildings. The DDA states that such building should have areas of safe refuge for those unable to manage the stairs in the event of an evacuation.
OK Fine so far. This surely is assuming the emergency is a fire and those in the safe refuge area will ‘assumable’ be rescued relatively quickly by the fire department if management does not/can not!

A recent survey on wheelchair users rated comfort on the wheelchair as the most important issue for individuals who use them. Like drivers who are paying more for comfort, wheelchair users now are willing to fork out more money for comfort. I understand where wheelchair users are coming from, since they are in the wheelchair for most part of the day, in fact around 15 hours.
